Heapy Engineering Headquarters Receives LEED® Platinum Certification

Heapy Engineering's Headquarters is the first facility in Ohio to be certified LEED® Platinum under the LEED for Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance v2009 rating system from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).  The Heapy HQ’s is also only the 8th Platinum certified building nationally under this rating system (Platinum is the highest level of certification attainable, with Certified, Silver and Gold preceding the Platinum rating).

The USGBC’s LEED Rating System is a third-party program that measures how well a building has met internationally benchmarked standards of sustainability related to energy efficiency, people comfort and environmental responsibility.

The Heapy Engineering Headquarters had previously been certified LEED Silver under the LEED for New Construction rating system, meeting environmentally responsible building standards for the original building construction.  The LEED for Existing Buildings: O&M rating system certifies that the methods Heapy Engineering uses to operate within the building are considered to meet high standards of sustainability.  These operations include: energy and water efficiency, sustainable purchasing, green cleaning and pest control methods, waste reduction and recycling, etc.

Based on USGBC guidelines, Heapy Engineering implemented changes to building operations that resulted in annual savings of over $11,000.  This included: $8,000 in energy savings, $1,500 in water savings and almost $1,000 saved by utilizing green cleaning products.  In addition, by double siding copies or not printing whenever possible, Heapy personnel were able to achieve another $1,400 in annual savings resulting from less waste produced and less paper purchased.

Michael Berning, Director of Sustainable Design for Heapy Engineering stated, “Heapy has always been a leader in designing sustainable buildings and has demonstrated once again that we also abide by these philosophies in our own operations.  Our employees truly deliver the message of environmental responsibility while producing the highest quality product that has been expected over our 65 plus years in business.”

Heapy Engineering, headquartered in Dayton Ohio, also has offices in Lawrenceburg and Indianapolis, Indiana and Columbus, Ohio.  Heapy Engineering provides Mechanical-Electrical-Technology Systems Design Services, LEED and Energy Consulting Services and Building Commissioning Services.  Heapy was recently ranked 34th in Building Design and Construction’s Giant 300 Report of top engineering firms in the country, was ranked 5th nationally for Building Commissioning by Consulting Specifying Engineering Magazine and Heapy has been recognized as a Top 100 Green Design Firm by Engineering News Record.
