On April 12, 2012, Heapy Engineering and Wright State University will co-host the Second Annual Symposium on Sustainability in Health Care (SSHC-12), The SSHC is an educational and networking event for Health Care providers and industry partners. This event will feature nationally renowned Health Care sustainability expert, Gary Cohen, as the keynote speaker.

 

The Symposium will be held on the campus of Wright State University in the Student Union Conference Center. The event will begin with a keynote luncheon followed by two panel discussions featuring regional and national experts on sustainably based Health Care delivery, operations and management. This year’s focus is: “Why Sustainability Should be a Strategic Priority in Your Health Care Organization.” A Trade Expo with exhibitors focusing on sustainability related services, materials, products and equipment associated with Health Care industry will run concurrent with the Symposium.

 

Senior health care administrators, medical practitioners, building design and construction professionals, nursing and clinical staff, medical students and educators, environmental health and safety personnel and health care facility managers should all attend.

 

CMEs*, AIA/HSW LUs, GBCI CEUs, PDH's and CPE's are approved.

Heapy Engineering, is nationally recognized for its leadership in Sustainable Design and is involved in over 200 LEED projects, (including the LEED Gold certified Diley Ridge Medical Center, the first free-standing emergency and diagnostic center in Central Ohio).  Heapy Engineering is the Design Engineer for the new $137 Million Indu and Raj Soin Medical Center (Beavercreek) and the $200 Million Mercy West Hospital (Cincinnati).  Heapy Engineering has achieved LEED Platinum certification in the LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance rating system for its Dayton based corporate headquarters, the highest level achievable.

Keynote Speaker:

Gary Cohen is founder, President, and Executive Director of Health Care Without Harm, the international campaign for environmentally responsible healthcare. Gary is also the Executive Director of the Environmental Health Fund, which works on domestic and global chemical safety issues. Gary is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Sambhavna Clinic and Documentation Center in Bhopal, India, which provides free medical care to the survivors of the Union Carbide gas disaster in Bhopal. He was awarded the Skoll Global Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2006 and the Frank Hatch Award for Enlightened Public Service in 2007.

 

When Gary co-founded HCWH, he visited hospitals around the country, explaining to stunned administrators how their operations were hurting patients, employees and communities.  However, not stopping there, he provided cost-effective solutions, as well as ongoing support through HCWH.  15 years later, HCWH is a broad association of nearly 500 hospitals, universities, health professional organizations and environmental groups working across the globe.  Gary has guided hospitals in leveraging their considerable buying power to get medical supply companies to provide greener products for the health care industry.

Janet Brown, Practice Greenhealth - Janet is the Director of Sustainable Operations for Practice Greenhealth. Janet helps health care workers recognize their value and critical role in improving the environmental performance of their organization. She specializes in creating an infrastructure to support continuous environmental improvement strategies in the health care environment. Janet supports hospitals through technical assistance, information-sharing, data collection, goal setting and program development. A few of her significant health care clients include Beth Israel Medical Center and other locations within the Continuum Health Partners.

 

John W. Rogers, AIA, ACHA, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center - John is the Corporate Architect at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. One of John’s long term goals has been to integrate sustainability into the healthcare environment and is working with leadership at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to increase awareness and understanding of the added value reducing our carbon footprint has on the environment. CCHMC has met or exceeded LEED certification thresholds on most projects for the last 8 to 10 years. Energy efficiency in a pediatric environment is an especially challenging opportunity. But, it is necessary to continue to “Change the Outcomes” at Children’s and be the good steward of our resources, improving performance now and in the future.

 

Anna Gilmore Hall, RN, MS, CAE leads Weston Solutions healthcare sustainability practice. She is a pioneer in the greening of healthcare. Until recently Gilmore Hall was the executive director of Practice Greenhealth, the nation's leading membership and networking organization for institutions in the healthcare community that have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices. Prior to her position with Practice Greenhealth, Ms. Gilmore Hall has held various staff positions including the position of Co-Executive Director of Health Care Without Harm, the international campaign for environmentally responsible health care, and the Director of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at the American Nurses Association (ANA) where she was responsible for developing and implementing environment policy issues for the largest nursing organization in the United States.

 

Christopher Parkinson, MBA - Chris has been working to shape, implement and monitor sustainability strategy at Cleveland Clinic. He is engaged in delivering a metrics-driven approach to healthy operations at the health system level, ensuring consistency in program implementation and quality in practice at each facility. He earned his BA in Biology from Ohio Wesleyan University and began his career in biomedical research for bio-defense. He received an MBA from Case Western Reserve University where he studied Strategic Management and Sustainability.

 

Christopher T. Mundell, AIA, CSI, CDT, LEED AP BD+C In his 18-year career, Chris has worked as a healthcare project architect and presently serves as a Vice President for HKS, Inc., managing the firm’s sustainability services. He guides project design teams in developing sustainable strategies, researches new and upcoming sustainable products/technologies and provides internal and external education on sustainability.

 

Joseph A. Mudd, LEED AP, As a senior project manager, Joe leads and manages complex commercial construction projects in Messer’s Louisville region. He has worked on several award-winning, high-profile projects, including Norton Healthcare Kosair Children’s Medical Center Brownsboro, Louisville International Airport Terminal Renovation and Kentucky Exposition Center East Wing/Hall Renovation. Select additional experience includes projects for Indiana University Health and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Joe earned both a B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He has earned professional certifications from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering, Kentucky Society of Healthcare Engineers and U.S. Green Building Council.
