Northwestern University Technology Institute Commissioning
Heapy Engineering provided LEED Commissioning Services for the Northwestern University Technology Institute Infill project in Evanston Illinois. The Technology Institute Infill project includes: two 5-story additions to Tech, which are a total of 100,000 SF. The North addition between B and C wings contains 2 floors of analytical chemistry space and 3 floors Engineering Life Science space. There is a 6th floor mechanical penthouse and no basement. Both infills have atriums with smoke evacuation systems. The South addition contains a Class 100, H5 rated clean room space with mechanical support directly above. Stacked above the mechanical room are 3 floors of office/classroom/lab space primarily for the Department of Earth and Planetary Science and a 6th floor mechanical room.
Heapy Engineering’s Commissioning Services include:
- Two Hot Water Systems
- Two Chilled Water Systems
- Two Central Air Handling Systems for Make-Up Air purposes
- Five Central Air Handling Systems
- One hundred fifty Terminal Units (Variable Air Volume Units)
- Twelve Exhaust Systems (including two manifold exhaust systems and two atrium smoke exhaust systems)
- Twelve Unit Heaters
- Thirty Laboratory Control Spaces (including supply and exhaust valves & fume hoods w/ exhaust valves)
- Automatic temperature control system
- Lighting Controls Systems (Daylight dimming controls & occupancy sensor controls)
- Domestic and Process water generation, distribution, pumping and mixing systems required to meet LEED Water Efficiency Credit criteria
- Laboratory Service Piping
- Life Safety Systems (fire alarm, egress pressurization, fire protection, atrium smoke evacuation)
- Security system (including electronic building/door access control system)
- Freeze Protection Emergency Operation
- Vertical TransportEmergency Generator
