Franklin County Courthouse

Franklin_County_Courthouse_1Heapy Engineering is designing the Mechanical-Electrical systems for the new standalone building, primarily housing the Franklin County Common Pleas courts and directly related functions, including the Clerk of Courts, satellite offices for the Prosecutor and Public Defender, a sallyport and central holding facility for detainees, and controlled access parking for judges and elected officials.

Franklin_County_Courthouse_2The project is anticipated to be approximately 300,000 SF with 7 floors above grade and a basement.  The construction cost is estimated at $100 million, with $26 million being for the mechanical and electrical systems.

It is anticipated that the building will use a 4 pipe boiler/chiller system that could be connected into the existing complex for the purposes of sharing some heating Franklin_County_Courthouse_3and cooling capacity.  It is further assumed that multiple air handlers will be required, with at least one per floor.  Also assumed as stairwell pressurization systems, and a building lobby requiring a smoke evacuation systems.  Emergency systems will be assumed to meet the requirements of the Ohio Building Code for high-rise buildings.  At least one generator with a reliable fuel source is assumed.  It is also anticipated that the building may be designed to permit load shedding, peak load shifting and other techniques designed to reduce operating costs.

Franklin County is committed to pursuing environmentally sustainable and energy efficient design in this project.Achieving LEED Certification from the US Green Building Council will allow the County to track, measure, and publicly demonstrate the value of green building design.
