The Ohio State University Thompson Library
Heapy performed a life cycle analysis prior to starting the design of the $105 Million renovation of the existing eleven-story high-rise structure. The Mechanical-Electrical systems were replaced and upgraded in the original building. The 1977 addition was replaced by a new 60,000 SF addition bringing the total project to 300,000 SF.
The renovated Thompson Library is the centerpiece of a
plan to move Ohio State into the forefront of academic excellence. Housing significant print collections, digital information resources, spaces for individual quiet study, and areas for interactive group learning, the building's original, unique architectural features were restored to their original grandeur.
The renovation and expansion plan expands the presence of the library on the growing western end of campus and respects the strong axial placement on the University’s main Oval. Bringing back the grand reading rooms of the original library, with remodeling of the interior atrium and stack tower restores the library to its central prominence on campus.
The project included extending 10" chilled water supply and return piping from existing 16" mains through new tunnel extensions to serve the library's cooling needs.
The project also included extending 4" high pressure steam and 2" high pressure condensate return from existing mains through a new connecting tunnel into the library's new basement. The design included stress analysis to show compliance with ANSI B31.1 standards.
The project was completed in 2009 with a total construction cost of $105,000,000 and a Mechanical-Electrical cost of $21,000,000.
