New understanding of our physiological and psychological relationship with our environment can be applied to healthcare planning, design, and architecture to improve the patient experience and improve healthcare outcomes.  Bill will explore research that reveals ways planning and design can promote better health.

Bill is one of the green building and real estate industry's foremost thinkers and strategists, and an advocate for sustainable design solutions at all levels of business, government, and civil society. Early in his career, Bill built Buckminster Fuller's last experimental structure.  In 2006, he cofounded Terrapin Bright Green an environmental strategies research and consulting firm.  He is a founding board member of the USGBC.  His expertise has been sought out by organizations as diverse as Fortune 500 companies, leading universities, non-profit organizations, the U.S. military, and foreign governments.  In addition to consulting, Bill writes and lectures widely on sustainable design and building practices.

 

 

Heapy Engineering Symposium on Sustainability in Healthcare NFPA Workshop

NFPA Codes and Standards in the Healthcare Environment Workshop (*additional cost of $99)
This program, presented by ASHE Faculty, is a custom ASHE education program, developed for Buckeye Power Sales.  This session will provide an overview of NFPA 99, 110, 70, and 101 as they relate to the healthcare environment.  Attendees will review the requirements of the codes and learn how to apply them in the healthcare setting.  The presenter will discuss the requirements and challenges associated with the codes and examine how they work together to provide a higher level of safety and reliability in healthcare.

Joint Commission Resources Program
The adoption of the 2012 editions of the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and the Health Care Facilities Code (NFPA 99) have brought significant changes to the healthcare environment.  The Joint Commission has revised and added standards in the Life Safety and Environment of Care chapters to align with the changes.  This presentation will go over some of the more recent changes and provide information related to success during survey.  We will also review the Top Ten most cited standards and discuss why they continue to be troublesome.

Andrea Webster, with the Louisville Office of Sustainability, will highlight the sustainability initiatives they are successfully pursuing in a city with a MSA population relative in size to the Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis regional areas.

We are excited to announce the addition of McCall Vrydaghs, Meteorologist for WHIOTV 7, as moderator of the Keynote panel.  McCall has been a part of the Storm Center 7 team at WHIO-TV since September 2012.  As an Emmy Winning and AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, McCall has an up front seat when it comes to the environment.  For the Dayton Community, she provides trustworthy, and objective up-to-date weather forecasts that impact life and property throughout the region.

After their brief presentations, a moderated Q & A session will follow with opportunity for questions from the audience.

This presentation discusses the fundamentals of energy and water conservation in and around buildings, using case studies from around the world as real world examples.  Different approaches to energy conservation are presented, ranging from architecturally integrated HVAC systems to innovative applications of packaged equipment.  Water conservation strategies range from water conserving fixtures, to outdoor landscapes and through desalination of brackish groundwater.

The Intersection of Sustainability, Energy and Maintenance of Roofs.
This seminar will provide solutions to roofing issues using Life Cycle based decisions, which evaluate and weigh the sustainability, energy reduction and ongoing maintenance impacts.  Even for the roofing novice, this Seminar will provide answers on how to approach similar decisions regarding buildings and their associated components and equipment serving them.  Building Owners, especially those with multiple facilities to maintain, and the design teams for those buildings should all attend this seminar.  Interesting (more so "quirky") case study examples will be woven throughout the presentation.
